Asset Hub and the Polkadot Cloud: Why the Future of NFTs is DOT-Centric
The Future of NFTs is here – and it’s DOT-centric.
Polkadot is reimagining NFTs and gaming as we speak, from Mythical Game’s FIFA Rivals to TapNation’s Color Water Sort sensation. NFTs are no longer these isolated assets, but as interoperable building blocks for Web3. From Asset Hub’s role in the Polkadot Cloud to DOT’s emergence as the anchor for NFT liquidity, this is the blueprint for a DOT-centric future.
In this article, we’ll explore Asset Hub’s evolving role in the Polkadot ecosystem for NFTs, the synergy it creates with parachains, and how we’re helping developers get onboarded to Web3 & Polkadot.
The Role of Asset Hub in the Polkadot Hub + Cloud Strategy
First, we need to understand what the Polkadot Cloud and Hub are, how these two products of the Polkadot ecosystem work together, what this means for you, and how to develop NFT dApps on Polkadot’s Asset Hub, using the right tools and support.
The Polkadot Cloud
As per Shawn Tabrizi, lead developer at Polkadot, “the Polkadot Cloud is a secure, scalable, and resilient platform for Web3 applications and services.”
Note: The Polkadot Cloud is currently not live, and a beta is coming soon.
In essence, the Polkadot Cloud is the backend infrastructure enabling developers to deploy parachains, rollups, smart contracts, and data services.
The Polkadot Hub
A Layer‑1 application chain built on top of Polkadot Cloud, offering a unified entry point for users and developers with the core services of the Polkadot ecosystem.
The Polkadot Hub is also the home for the Polkadot community, the DOT token, and other tokens across the Polkadot ecosystem, with native features such as Smart Contracts, Staking, Governance, and lots more.

The role of Asset Hub in the Polkadot Hub & Cloud
Asset Hub is a system parachain (a critical component) in the Polkadot ecosystem, designed as the trusted „home base” for tokens and NFTs, supporting efficient creation, management, and XCM-based transfers across parachains.
Integration with Polkadot Cloud
- Leverages shared security and high throughput enabled by Polkadot Cloud’s infrastructure, which already includes execution, settlement, data availability, and object storage.
- By operating as a parachain, Asset Hub inherits all Cloud benefits, allowing developers to issue assets with low fees and minimal deposit requirements.
- It supports metadata-rich NFTs and cross‑chain asset tracking, using Data Availability and Object Storage Services for robustness.
Role within Polkadot Hub
Although Asset Hub does not host smart contracts, it enables other parachains and the Hub (which has Ethereum-compatible contracts) to interact with its assets, letting developers build DeFi, gaming, and NFT apps on the Hub that reference Asset Hub-issued tokens.
What does this mean for NFTs?
Polkadot’s Asset Hub is increasingly becoming a major player in the Polkadot ecosystem and a crucial part of the infrastructure in the Polkadot Hub and Cloud vision. Asset Hub is emerging as a foundational chain for NFTs and fungible assets—distinct yet complementary to the specialized parachains that expand Polkadot’s feature set.
Unique Network’s pallet supports both fungible tokens (ERC-20 equivalents) and NFTs, making NFT creation on Asset Hub straightforward. This allows developers to easily explore and build NFT experiences directly on Polkadot’s Asset Hub.
For example, during the EasyA x Consensus Hackathon in Hong Kong, where NFTMozaic participated, NFT dApp development was built directly on Polkadot’s Asset Hub.
To ensure developers could solve this challenge and create their solution, we equipped developers at the hackathon with the best and easiest-to-use tools, such as the Unique Network SDK.
When it comes to NFT dApp development, specifically on Asset Hub, one of the core issues is the lack of developer experience and the right people to strengthen development activity to generate ideas and applications.
Asset Hub: A Central Point for NFT dApp Development
Asset Hub is a central place for NFT dApp development, whether you’re focused on PoCs, hackathons, gaming, DeFi, RWAs, NFTs, or identity. You can leverage Asset Hub for your project.
Asset Hub and parachains (roll-ups) form a powerful, symbiotic relationship that amplifies NFT capabilities across the whole network. Main features include:
Shared Security & Interoperability
Asset Hub is a system parachain that inherits the shared Relay Chain’s security and full trust to transfer DOT and other assets via XCM to any connected parachain.
Efficient Asset Management at Scale
The Polkadot Asset Hub employs an embedded Assets pallet for tokens and the Unique Network’s pallet for NFTs. Asset Hub offers a frictionless, cost-effective alternative to handling custom asset logic themselves.
Developer Friendly for Everyone
Devs can focus on building niche features while delegating all token mechanics (issuance, metadata, XCM handling) to Asset Hub. It also provides AMM-based fee conversion, allowing fee payments in any sufficiency-enabled asset and simplifying user onboarding across parachains.
When it comes to developing on Asset Hub by leveraging NFTs, you can see that the Unique Network SDK and the Apillion SDK are both great choices, and here’s why:
- The Unique Network SDK facilitates seamless integration of AssetHub’s and Unique Network’s capabilities into the Web3 application, bypassing the need for direct low-level API interaction. Currently powers the ‘Color Water Sort’ mobile game by TapNation.
- Apillon’s SDK also provides a way to deploy contracts and mint NFTs, but via a Web3 drag-and-drop interface on Moonbeam, Astar, Asset Hub, and Unique Network. As a general-purpose SDK, the Apillon API provides all the elements necessary to access the underlying processes, making it a viable albeit somewhat different approach.
You’ll notice that Asset Hub acts as the glue between parachains, providing a secure, standardized, and efficient backbone for NFT assets.

Developer Challenges and Tooling to Help You
Gaps in Indexing & API Tooling
Unlike more mature ecosystems, Polkadot lacks a standardized set of indexing and API tools for easily fetching and displaying full, well-structured NFT data. Developers must rely on custom solutions or scattered third-party services, leading to inconsistencies and increased maintenance overhead.
Lack of Comprehensive Documentation & Examples
For some approaches, developers face a steep learning curve due to the absence of clear, up-to-date documentation, structured tutorials, and reliable boilerplate projects. Many implementations require extensive reverse engineering, slowing down development and adoption.
NFTMozaic’s commitment remains toward providing the community with the most relevant information and resources to navigate the challenges effectively.

How NFTMozaic is Advocating for Developer Onboarding on Asset Hub
NFTMozaic is laser-focused on lowering the barrier to entry for developers building NFT apps on Polkadot.
Think of us like the go-to hub accelerating NFT adoption on Polkadot, focusing on marketing, developer/technical assistance, governance, and business development.
Here are some key initiatives we’re driving for developer onboarding:
- Developer Tooling & SDKs: Out-of-the-box NFT Pallets and SDK support throughout the process. We can assist you with implementing your ideas with the best practices and tooling.
- Hackathons & Live Demos: NFTMozaic organized hands-on demos, like NFT XCM transfers, and participated in global events (Consensus Hong Kong, ETHDenver). Showcasing projects like TapNations’ mini-game (Color Water Sort), powered by Unique Network’s SDK.
- Ecosystem Building & Resources: The team is actively curating developer resources, updating the NFT Wiki guides, example apps, indexers, and technical research, and creating an alliance of NFTs for all parachains, projects, and ecosystem agents.
